Nun discharged from Madrid hospital after being given ebola all-clear

Sister Juliana Bonoha, the nun who tended to a Spanish priest who contracted ebola in Liberia, was discharged from a Madrid hospital on Thursday after doctors confirmed she is not suffering from the disease.

Father Miguel Pajares died at Carlos III hospital on August 12 after a team of specialized physicians fought to save his life for five days under strict safety measures to prevent the spread of the highly contagious disease. He had been flown in from Liberia on August 7.

Sister Juliana, who came with him, was kept under observation for 21 days to see whether she had also developed ebola after being in direct contact with the virus.

The nun is “in good health and in a lively mood,” according to a press release issued by her congregation, the Missionaries of the Immaculate Conception.

Bonoha has asked the media to respect her wish to be left alone “as she needs to rest,” the release adds.

“The Missionaries of the Immaculate Conception wish to express our gratitude to the government of Spain and to all the public agencies involved in bringing back Sister Juliana, and also to the medical personnel at Carlos III hospital,” say the sisters in their statement. “We also want to thank society in general and the media for the shows of support ever since she arrived in Spain.”
