The coast guard in the Galician province of Lugo was on Monday morning continuing a search operation for a 15-year-old boy on a bicycle who was swept into the sea by waves in the town of Foz on Sunday. The northern coast of Spain has been battered by a powerful storm over the weekend, but winds are expected to be moderate to strong during Monday.

Snow is expected to fall on many parts of northern and central Spain today, with the provinces of Pontevedra, Lugo, Orense, Asturias, Navarra, Huesca, Girona, León, Palencia, Burgos, La Rioja, Zaragoza, Soria, Guadalajara, Segovia, Ávila, Salamanca, Cáceres, Toledo, Ciudad Real, Madrid and Cuenca all on amber alert. Coastal regions in Almería, Granada, and on the Canary islands of Lanzarote  and Fuerteventura have received gale warnings.

On Sunday Basque Country officials ordered several bridges to be closed while some municipalities declared emergencies following the powerful storm that battered Spain’s northern coast. The Basque Country civil defense office said that waves as high as seven meters were reported in some areas.
