Barcelona opts against bid for 2022 Winter Olympic Games
Mayor puts decision down to lack of consensus

Barcelona and the Catalan Pyrenees have decided not to bid to host the 2022 Winter Olympic Games and will delay the candidacy for another four years, the city’s major, Xavier Trias, said in a statement released Friday.
“It is necessary to continue building the political consensus to carry out a collective project for the city and the country that allows Barcelona to present a winning bid,” Trias said.
Trias, of the Catalan center-right nationalist CiU group, had the support of the Socialists and Catalan Republic Left in City Hall to present a bid for 2022, but the leftist green ICV opposed it, while the conservative Popular Party said it would abstain on any vote held on the bid.
