British police officers working with their Spanish colleagues on Friday morning arrested veteran ETA militant Raúl Sánchez Fuentes Villota in the northwest city of Liverpool in response to a request from the Spanish High Court, according to a statement from the Interior Ministry.
The 47-year-old Fuentes Villota joined ETA in 1990 and spent four years in jail after being arrested in 1991. He later went into hiding. He is accused of having murdered four people. In May 2003, along with another veteran of the Basque terrorist organization, José María Zaldua Korta, alias Aitona, he sent a letter from Liverpool informing the ETA leadership that he was giving up the armed struggle because of “tiredness” but would remain a member of the group.
ETA announced last year it was laying down its weapons after killing 829 people over more than four decades, but has not disbanded.
