This week’s movie releases

Joseph Gordon-Levitt is a hitman ordered to take out his future self (Bruce Willis) in Rian Johnson’s sci-fi thriller Looper. In 2074 the mafia is sending its victims back 30 years to be dispatched by assassins — known as Loopers — like Gordon-Levitt’s Joe. One day, Joe finds himself face-to-face with his older self, sent back from the future to “close the loop” as he knows too much. Exploiting his hesitation, the older Joe gets away, leaving the younger man to hunt him down. Made up to resemble a young Willis, Gordon-Levitt doesn’t exactly look like he’s just stepped off the set of Moonlighting, but you’ll be too caught up in the action and the complexities of the time-travel plot to notice.

If you’re looking for a whip-smart satirical take on the forthcoming US election, you won’t find it in The Campaign. Directed by Austin Powers’ Jay Roach, it’s a knockabout comedy starring Will Ferrell as a charismatic congressman embroiled in a down-and-dirty electoral race with tourism chief Zach Galifianakis (The Hangover). The plot embraces everything from sex tapes to baby-punching.

From director Paul Schrader and based on Yoram Kaniuk’s 1968 novel, Adam Resurrected features Jeff Goldblum as a Holocaust survivor in an Israeli mental hospital. Willem Dafoe and Derek Jacobi also star.

Finally, Argentinean-Spanish coproduction ¡Atraco! stars Guillermo Francella, Amaia Salamanca and Óscar Jaenada in a 1950s-set thriller about a plot to steal Eva Peron’s jewel collection in Madrid.
