González takes office as new regional premier for Madrid
New leader takes over from Esperanza Aguirre who suddenly resigned earlier this month Socialist leader Gómez and IU chief Gordo boycott Thursday's swearing-in ceremony
Ignacio González was sworn in on Thursday as Madrid’s new regional premier, stepping into an office that was left vacant with Esperanza Aguirre’s sudden resignation earlier this month.
In his speech, González said he was “proud” to serve Madrid residents and pledged to oversee “a responsible” government.
Popular Party (PP) secretary general María Dolores de Cospedal presided over the ceremony, which was held at the premier’s headquarters in central Sol square.
The swearing-in was boycotted by the Madrid Socialist Party (PSM) and the United Left (IU) coalition. The PP accused the leaders of both parties, Tomás Gómez and Gregorio Gordo, of “institutional disloyalty.”
