Number of Spaniards on 'Forbes' rich list up from 14 to 16

Mining and commodities trader and Melía hotelier join fellow countrymen Overall number of individuals on the list rises despite the crisis

Despite the crisis, two more Spaniards have joined the ranks of the world's mega-rich on the annual list compiled by Forbes magazine, raising the number from 14 to 16.

Daniel Badenes of mining and commodities trader Glencore and Gabriel Escarrer of the Melía hotel chain join fellow countrymen such as Zara owner Amancio Ortega - the world's fifth richest man with a fortune of $37.5 billion - and Isak Andic of the Mango clothing chain ($4.8 billion) in the exclusive club.

The overall number of individuals on the list, the members of which all hold fortunes of $1 billion or more, has also risen, from 1,210 to 1,226. The ranking is once again headed by Mexico's Carlos Slim ($69 billion), followed by Microsoft founder Bill Gates ($61 billion) and Warren Buffett ($44 billion).
