Iberia ground staff vote to join strike

Workers vote in favor of striking two days a week from February 3 onwards

Ground staff at leading Spanish airline Iberia on Tuesday voted in favor of an indefinite series of stoppages from next month as part of demands for job security guarantees from the management after the launch of the company's low-cost short-to-medium haul carrier Iberia Express, union representatives said.

Eleven out of 13 union members on the company's works committee voted for strikes on Monday and Friday of every week from February 3 onwards.

The airline's pilot union SEPLA has also called for further stoppages on January 25, 27 and 30, also to protest the creation of Iberia Express. Pilots have already walked off the job four days between the end of last year and the beginning of this year. Cabin crew, however, have so far continued to work normally. Iberia CEO Rafael Sánchez Lozano warned the situation at Iberia "could become unmanageable."
