Iberia cancels 118 flights on December 29 due to strike

Second day of industrial action over plans for budget airline

Spanish carrier Iberia on Tuesday announced it was cancelling 118 flights scheduled for December 29 due to the second one-day stoppage this month by its pilots to protest the creation of a new low-cost airline.

The called-off flights are not covered by the minimum services the government has ordered the pilots to provide. They represent some 36 percent of Iberia's scheduled flights. Associate airlines Air Nostrum and Vueling's flights, as well as those operated by other companies under code-sharing deals, are not affected.

Flights to the Canary and Balearic Islands are covered by minimum services. Iberia on Tuesday also called on the pilots' union to renew talks on the dispute on Wednesday.
