Moroccan police shove IU deputy onto plane in Western Sahara
Lawmaker taken to hospital after returning to the Canary Islands
Willy Meyer, a Eurodeputy representing the United Left (IU) coalition, was pushed back on his plane by Moroccan police following his expulsion from Western Sahara on Sunday.
Meyer was able to take a few steps off the plane's ladder before the police reportedly pushed him back inside and ordered the craft to depart Laâyoune. He was traveling with José Pérez Ventura, IU candidate for Congress.
The IU lawmaker fell to the ground during the incident and injured his neck and wrist.
The captain and the flight crew of the Blinter Canarias plane warned the police that they were intruding on Spanish territory. Meyer was taken to a Las Palmas hospital when he arrived back in the Canary Islands.
