King Juan Carlos discharged from hospital after successful operation

Monarch will not attend any public events for at least a month

King Juan Carlos was discharged from a Madrid hospital on Monday after successfully undergoing surgery to repair damage to the Achilles tendon of his left foot, Spain's royal Zarzuela Palace said.

In a statement, the palace said that the 73-year-old monarch had the procedure with local anesthesia overnight Sunday and was discharged from the hospital early Monday morning.

It was the third time this year the king has undergone surgery. In May, Juan Carlos had a benign tumor removed from one of his lungs, and the following month he underwent surgery on his right knee.

The palace says the king now faces a slow period of rehabilitation and will not attend any public events for at least a month.
