Contador gets one-year doping ban from Spanish Federation
Cyclist has 10 days to appeal a decision which would mean his losing the 2010 Tour de France crown
The Spanish Cycling Federation on Wednesday told Alberto Contador that it would impose a one-year ban on the 2010 Tour de France winner for returning a positive test for clenbuterol at last year's race. It is expected that the ban will be publicly announced today.
Contador, who has been under provisional suspension since August for a miniscule 50-picogram trace of the anabolic steroid found in a urine sample, has 10 days to appeal the sanction. The Madrid-born rider could also be stripped of his Tour de France title. Contador also won the race in 2007 and 2009.
The International Cycling Union and the World Anti-Doping Agency may also decide to challenge the decision; a two-year ban is the norm for a doping infraction. The Spanish federation considered the tiny quantity of the doping substance detected to be a mitigating factor.
Contador claims that the trace of clenbuterol, a steroid used in cattle farming, was ingested via tainted meat.
