US presidential election results: How the country has voted since 1868
EL PAÍS has mapped the outcome of every vote in the United States over the past century, starting with Ulysses S. Grant’s victory
The United States is the only presidential democracy in the world that does not elect its president directly. Instead, the president is elected by the Electoral College, which currently consists of 538 members, with the number of electors in each state proportional to its congressional delegation. In all states except Maine and Nebraska, electoral votes are awarded on a “winner-takes-all” basis. Here is a look at Electoral College results and the elected presidents from each U.S. election since 1868.
