Police release video of pregnant Black woman shot dead by US officer
Ta’Kiya Young, 21, had been accused of stealing alcohol from a local business. She was shot after refusing to get out of her car
Police in Blendon Township, Ohio, have released bodycam footage from officers involved in the death of Ta’Kiya Young, a 21-year-old pregnant Black woman.
Young died after being shot by police officers in the parking lot of a grocery store on August 24. Her unborn baby also died in the shooting.
In the incident, a police officer is seen approaching the driver’s window while another stands in front of Young’s car. Young had been accused of stealing bottles of alcohol. According to store employees, multiple people stole items from the store, but fled in other vehicles.
In the footage, the woman refuses to get out of the car and is seen driving forward. The police officer standing in front of her car then shoots her through the windshield. The car advanced several meters until it crashed against the wall of the store.
Young received emergency care from a doctor who witnessed the scene, but did not survive the shooting.
