Driver survives after flying through the air and crashing into supermarket wall

A driver was injured on Tuesday morning in a spectacular accident in a parking lot in Madrid, Spain. For reasons that remain unclear, the 47-year-old man lost control of his car near the entrance of the parking lot, rammed right through some large planters and a fence, then flew six or seven feet in the air until the vehicle crashed into the wall of a Mercadona supermarket.

Most remarkably, the man survived and was reported to have suffered a moderate head injury after being pulled out of the car by Madrid firefighters and taken to a nearby hospital.

A spokeswoman for the emergency services said the incident took place at around 9 a.m. on the corner of General Aranaz street and Telemaco street, in the Spanish capital’s eastern district of San Blas. The vehicle has sustained significant damage.

As a result of the accident, the man suffered a “moderate” head injury, according to the spokeswoman. He was transferred to Gregorio Marañón Hospital in a potentially serious condition, which in medical terms means that no serious injuries were initially apparent, but more testing is required to determine the effects of the very strong impact against the wall.

For now, no details have emerged about the cause of the accident. Neither the emergency services nor the police have offered any information as to whether the driver lost consciousness, got distracted, or whether he was under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
