At least one person has died and six more have been injured in a shooting that occurred Friday night in Cancún, a resort city in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo. The shooting began at around 9pm on Kabah Avenue, the nightlife hub of the popular tourist destination. According to local press reports, two bars on this avenue – Déja Vu and Las Micheladas de la Kabah – were simultaneously attacked.

One person was found dead at Las Micheladas de la Kabah, while the injured were found at Déjà Vu. According to the local daily El Sol de México, another victim was found dead at the former bar, but this report has yet to be confirmed.

Survivors said that at least 20 shots were fired before the attackers fled the area. Quintana Roo Prosecutor’s Office reported on Saturday that one person has so far been arrested in connection with the crime.

Videos shared on social media show people running to take cover as the shots are fired. The sound of rounds being fired off is heard until the attackers flee. In one of the recordings, an employee is seen trying to take cover only to be shot in cold blood. According to local media, at least two other bars in Cancún have been attacked in the past week, leaving two people injured.

Violence in the state of Quintana Roo has intensified in the last year, with tourists and nightclubs caught in the crossfire. The situation has sparked concerns about security in the state, which is a destination for large numbers of US tourists. The FBI intervened in a matter in Quintana Roo in February, while US authorities have issued alerts about travel to the Mexican Caribbean.
