The Spanish king’s €11 meal
Felipe VI stops at a roadside restaurant for a humble ‘menú del día’ on his way back from an award ceremony

King Felipe VI stopped at a roadside restaurant on Monday to eat a budget meal after handing out an award at Yuste Monastery, in Cáceres province.
He and acting Education Minister Iñigo Méndez de Vigo drove back to Madrid after getting to Yuste by helicopter, and stopped at Puerta de Extremadura, a 24-hour eatery located within the city limits of La Calzada de Oropesa (Toledo).
Today, it is a cause for personal pride and satisfaction to have had such an important person eating in my place as the King of Spain. Thank you, Your Majesty
Restaurant owner
The monarch ordered the €11 menú del día, comprising sautéed rabbit and potatoes, a meat dish, a salad, sponge cake and a banana.
At the end of the meal, Felipe VI chatted with the other diners and had his picture taken with the restaurant owner and employees.
Later, the restaurant uploaded several photos on social media and the following comment by the owner: “Today, it is a cause for personal pride and satisfaction to have had such an important person eating in my place as the King of Spain. Thank you, Your Majesty.”
