Downtown Los Angeles collapsing, the Hoover Dam cracking into pieces, a tsunami engulfing the Golden Gate Bridge… the Big One everyone feared has finally hit and the whole of California is crumbling to the ground in glorious CGI in earthquake drama San Andreas. Not, though, The Rock. Man mountain Dwayne Johnson stars as a fire service chopper pilot trying to patch things up with his estranged wife (Carla Gugino) and rescue their teenage daughter (Alexandra Daddario) amid the chaos in Brad Peyton’s ’70s throwback disaster drama. Paul Giammati plays the beardy seismologist trying to make sense of it all, while Ioan Gruffudd is Gugino’s cowardly new real estate developer boyfriend.

Melissa McCarthy’s comic talents are given full reign in action comedy Spy, which re-teams her with Bridesmaids and The Heat director Paul Feig. She plays a deskbound CIA employee helping steer suave agent Jude Law through his dangerous missions. But when disaster strikes, she’s forced to head into the field herself, much to the disgust of super-spy Jason Statham sending up his own hard-as-nails persona who doesn’t think this frumpy analyst is cut out for the job. With Rose Byrne, Miranda Hart, Bobby Cannavale and Allison Janney.

The latest from Patrice Leconte, the French director of arthouse successes such as Ridicule and The Man on the Train, Do Not Disturb is an adaptation of the stage farce by Florian Zeller, who also co-wrote the screenplay. Christian Clavier stars as a middle-class guy who finds his attempts to sit down to listen to the rare jazz record he’s just bought constantly thwarted by an array of problems brought to him by his wife (Carole Bouquet), mistress (Valérie Bonneton), neighbor, and housekeeper (played by Spanish Almodóvar favorite Rossy de Palma).

Growing problems

Israeli drama The Kindergarten Teacher stars Sarit Larry as an educator who becomes obsessed with trying to nurture the talent of a five-year-old poetry prodigy (Avi Shnaidman). Nadav Lapid directs.

Meanwhile, Brazilian flick The Second Mother stars Regina Casé as a woman who gave up her relationship with her own daughter to work as a live-in housekeeper for a São Paulo family, and bring up their son. Thirteen years later, when her now whipsmart teenage offspring finally comes to stay, she finds living under the same roof as her far from easy.
