A catch-up with the capital’s English-speaking community

The British Benevolent Fund and St George’s Church are holding a summer fête in Madrid

Simon Hunter

A rugby team, a soccer side, a gospel choir, a theater company, social groups, children’s clubs… It may not be a surprise to hear that these exist in Madrid – but what you might not know is that all of these associations have an English-speaking version in the Spanish capital.

If that’s news to you, you may be interested in finding out more about the city’s English-language offerings at the English-Speaking Community of Madrid’s Summer Fête. The event is taking place from 7pm onward on Thursday September 11, at St George’s Anglican Church, at number 43, Núñez de Balboa street.

The fête is organized by St George’s in conjunction with the British Benevolent Fund of Madrid, which helps British nationals – or dependents of British nationals – in Spain when they are facing upheaval or hardship in their lives.

Exhibitors will include the Madrid Lions rugby club, The International English Speakers Group and FC Británico soccer club

Whether you are long-term expat resident of Madrid, a newcomer to the city, or a Spanish native looking to practice your English, all are welcome at the event. Exhibitors will include the Madrid Lions rugby club, The International English Speakers Group, FC Británico soccer club, The Children’s Gospel Choir, The Madrid Players theater company and the St George’s Mother & Toddler Group, among many others.

Food and drink at the event will be provided by the Mad Dog Tavern, a bar in Moncloa that describes itself as a “little Britain in the center of Madrid,” and Best of Britain, a Madrid-based store devoted to British food products.
