Five climbers die in two separate falls
All the deaths occurred in Sierra de Gredos
Five mountaineers lost their lives in the same mountain range over the weekend, the emergency services have reported.
Three people plunged 450 meters to their deaths in Sierra de Gredos, a mountain range in Ávila that is popular with hikers, as they picked their way up to Almanzor Peak (2,592 meters) on Sunday. The accident was reported shortly before 2pm by a fellow climber who witnessed the fall.
Rescuers later found the bodies of two men and a woman who were not carrying any ID on them and appeared to be out on a winter climbing expedition. A witness said they were wearing safety equipment.
The deaths came just one day after two other mountaineers lost their lives in the area of La Araña, also in Sierra de Gredos. The victims have been identified as L. G. G, 41, and J. M. D. N, 45.
Over the last decade, 225 people have died in mountain sport-related activities.
