GÜRTEL CASE

Gürtel judge orders banks to supply details of suspect’s dealings

Magistrate’s decision follows reluctance on part of lenders to supply information

Police were sent on Friday to the headquarters of Banco Sabadell and Bankinter to obtain information about financial transactions by a former Madrid regional official named in the Gürtel kickbacks-for contracts case.

High Court Judge Pablo Ruz took the step given the banks’ reluctance to hand over information regarding a 1.6-million-euro deposit by Alberto López Viejo, a former sports commissioner in the conservative Popular Party Madrid government.

López Viejo is suspected of accepting bribes in exchange for approving government contracts. He accumulated personal wealth of at least 5.5 million euros “of unjustified origin” in four years, according to a tax agency report.
