Bárcenas judge sees possible crime in hard disks' destruction

Popular Party had argued that the wiping of the drives is standard practice

Fernando J. Pérez

A judge investigating an alleged network of illegal donations and cash bonuses to party officials within the governing Popular Party (PP) on Thursday forwarded a probe into the destruction of hard disks used by former party treasurer Luis Bárcenas to a Madrid court.

High Court Judge Pablo Ruz believes that the destruction of the drives used by Bárcenas while he worked for the party could constitute crimes of concealment or damaging evidence.

However, he does not think the investigation falls within the remit of the National High Court, but rather a court in Madrid, where the alleged crimes were committed.

The PP has said that the wiping of drives is standard practice.
