Spain must decide fate of 24 Afghan translators
Social networking sites providing support for asylum request by professionals who claim to be threatened by Taliban
Spain will have to decide whether or not to grant political asylum to 24 translators who worked for its troops in Afghanistan, and whose names figure on a document handed over to the Spanish Embassy in Kabul last Thursday.
While the ultimate decision rests with the Foreign Ministry, the Defense Ministry will be responsible for providing information about the nature of the relationship between the asylum seekers and the Spanish armed forces, and whether it is true, as they claim, that they are in a situation of risk, having been threatened by the Taliban since Spanish troops left Badghis.
A campaign in support of the translators has already gathered 30,000 signatures via social networking sites.
