Turnout for Basque Country general strike below 20 percent

Gipuzkoa province sees strongest support

Basque labor unions were yesterday hailing a strong adherence to Thursday’s region-wide general strike, despite government figures showing turnout below 20 percent in the private and public sectors. Stoppages were highest in Gipuzkoa where 43.1 percent of private sector employees failed to show up for work, according to the regional labor department, with an 11.5-percent turnout in Álava and 10.8 percent in Bizkaia.

Thousands took part in marches in the regional capital of Vitoria and other cities on Thursday to mark the strike, which was called by the ELA, LAB and other unions to protest cuts to social and employment rights.
