Strong evidence seen in Bárcenas Gürtel kickbacks probe
But prosecutors say it is still too early to fit former PP treasurer with an electronic tag
The anticorruption public prosecutor believes there are “multiple and convincing indications” that former Popular Party (PP) treasurer Luis Bárcenas committed crimes, but says it is still too early to consider fitting him with an electronic tag.
The prosecution in the Gürtel kickbacks-for-contracts corruption case, in which Bárcenas is under investigation, had requested that Judge Pablo Ruz withdraw his passport, fit a tag or order him to report to court on a weekly basis in order to ensure he shows up for this court appointment on February 25. But prosecutors Miriam Segura and Concha Sabadell believe it is up to Ruz to rule on the matter after Bárcenas declares.
The PP’s former moneyman, who is thought to be behind an alleged slush fund providing off-the-books payments to party leaders, recently returned from a skiing trip to Canada.
