Three people killed as powerful weekend storms sweep across the country
Woman in Badajoz crushed by gates at her home
A 54-year-old woman in Badajoz died on Sunday from the injuries she had sustained when a gate fell on top of her after it was knocked down by high winds.
It was the third death from the strong storms that swept across the peninsula over the weekend. The woman was found by her family unconscious underneath one of the large gates to her home that had been felled by the storm. Two other deaths were reported in Cartagena on Saturday.
High winds and heavy rain caused numerous incidents across Spain. An AVE high-speed train traveling from Madrid to Ourense derailed when debris and rock was blown over the rails. The 57 passengers, some of whom suffered minor injuries, were immediately evacuated.
In Andalusia, nine highways were closed because of snow, flooding and downed trees. In Madrid, gusts knocked down heavy tree branches across the city Friday night. Firefighters were called to the Santa Ana public soccer field in Fuencarral-El Pardo to block off a large area where a large stadium fence was left dangling across a sidewalk.
