Tom Cruise surprises audiences in latest role as rock star
Set in a magical medieval Scotland, the latest digital animation from the Pixar stable is a kind of Braveheart for tots. Bravefollows Merida (voiced by Kelly Macdonald), a flame-haired princess and a dab hand with a bow and arrow, who unleashes chaos in her kingdom after she defies ancient tradition. Turning to a witch (Julie Walters) for help, she brings a curse upon her family and must fight to lift it before it's too late. The Scot-heavy voice cast also features Billy Connolly, Emma Thompson, Robbie Coltrane and Craig Ferguson.
Tom Cruise sings in Rock of Ages, the movie adaptation of the Broadway musical of 1980s rock hits. He plays Stacee Jaxx, front man of rock band Arsenal and the hero of LA nightclub singer Drew (Diego Boneta), who hooks up with aspiring starlet Sherrie (Julianne Hough) to pursue his dreams of stardom. The ensemble cast also features Paul Giamatti, Russell Brand, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Alec Baldwin, Mary J. Blige, Bryan Cranston and Malin Akerman, while the soundtrack is a heady mix of head-banging tracks from the likes of Def Leppard, Foreigner, Journey and Poison.
A lonely little boy makes a wish for his beloved teddy bear to come to life and finds it miraculously granted. But what happens 25 years later when the boy is grown up? That's the central conceit of Ted, the first feature-length comedy from Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane. Mark Wahlberg plays the adult Johnny whose talking teddy, Ted (digitally animated, and voiced by MacFarlane himself), is still his closest companion after all this time. The pair share a house, beers and lots of dirty jokes together, but as Johnny's girlfriend Mila Kunis ( Black Swan ) starts hinting at marriage, Johnny realizes it might be time for his debauched furry friend to start standing on his own two feet.
