After the camp Mirror, Mirror, Hollywood’s second Snow White adaptation of the year, Snow White and the Huntsman, puts the Grimm back into the classic fairytale, along with a spot of Lord of the Rings-style sword-swinging. Charlize Theron is the wicked queen who sends rugged axman Chris Hemsworth (Thor) to capture her fairer stepdaughter, Kristen Stewart (The Twilight Saga). Instead, though, he falls head over heels in love, teaches her how to handle herself and, accompanied by an infatuated young duke (Sam Claflin) and eight dwarves (Bob Hoskins, Toby Jones and Ray Winstone, among them), it’s off to work they all go. A Spanish adaptation of the story, Blancanieves, starring Maribel Verdú, is also on its way.

Fighting Franco

Set against the backdrop of the anti-Franco resistance in 1950s Andalusia, Imanol Uribe’s Miel de Naranjas opens a window on a lesser-explored chapter of Spanish history. Iban Garate is the young soldier on military service in a court who is pushed into the covert fight against the Caudillo by the injustices he witnesses under boss Karra Elejalde (Even the Rain), the uncle of his girlfriend Blanca Suárez (The Skin I Live In). Unfortunately, though, it’s rather stolidly told, with the capable cast — which includes Eduard Fernández, Ángela Molina and Bárbara Lennie — helpless to dispel the feeling you’re watching a TV show, only with better lighting.

The Big Chill writer-director Lawrence Kasdan’s first feature in nine years, Darling Companion, is a comedy starring Diane Keaton as a woman with two grown daughters and a pompous surgeon of a husband (Kevin Kline) who adopts a stray dog who becomes her beloved friend. When he goes missing in the Rockies, family, friends and a Gypsy psychic unite to mount a full-scale search.

Supernatural thriller Shelter stars Julianne Moore as a forensic psychiatrist dedicated to disproving the existence of split personality disorder. She meets her match in the form of patient Jonathan Rhys Meyers, who seems to have taken on the identities of multiple murder victims.

The French-German ...And If We All Live Together features Guy Bedos, Geraldine Chaplin, Jane Fonda, Claude Rich and Pierre Richard as a group of senior citizens who, along with a researcher specializing in old age (Daniel Brühl), opt to move in together rather than enter a retirement home.

Featuring a cameo by Iker Casillas, Spanish-Argentinean comedy En fuera de juego stars Diego Peretti as a soccer-hating Argentinean doctor, and Fernando Tejero as a two-bit Spanish sports agent brought together to help the career of a promising young player.
