PROTEST MOVEMENT

Anti-riot police to swamp Sol for 15-M's first anniversary

Between 1,500 and 2,000 Police Intervention Unit (UIP) officers will be deployed Presence will be greater than March 29 general strike and Pope Benedict XVI's visit

Spanish anti-riot police will take to the center of Madrid in unprecedented numbers this weekend when the 15-M movement is due to mark its first anniversary with a series of demonstrations.

Between 1,500 and 2,000 Police Intervention Unit (UIP) officers will be deployed - more than during the March 29 general strike and Pope Benedict XVI's visit last August - according to news wire Efe.

Their aim will be to prevent the popular protest movement from forming a new camp in Sol square, as it did last year, and ensure it complies with the plan drawn up by the central government's Madrid delegate that allows it to gather in Sol from May 12-15 under a strict timetable.
