Joint police sting nets 10 in “latest generation” doping ring

Police say network had a “direct implication” in positive tests at Beijing Olympics

A joint police operation between the forces in Madrid and Barcelona netted 10 people suspected of running an international network trafficking doping substances, the National Police and Mossos d’Esquadra said Monday.

Six people were arrested in Catalonia and a further four in Madrid. The police counted among their number the Colombian doctor Alberto Beltrán, who was detained at Barajas airport and has been in custody since March 8. Beltrán was picked up on March 5 trying to leave the country with a suitcase full of “latest generation” doping substances.

According to the Mossos, the network had a “direct implication” in many of the positive tests recorded at the Beijing Olympic Games, the Vuelta a España 2010 and the Spanish Athletics Championships of the same year.
