Catalan town’s cannabis plan may be brought down by law
Rasquera officials face probe by Tarragona district attorney’s office
Anti-drug prosecutors have opened an investigation into the Tarragona town of Rasquera after councilors passed an ordinance to cultivate marijuana on government land in an effort to rake in money for the cash-strapped municipality.
The district attorney office in Tarragona is looking into the plan that could have criminal consequences for town officials. “Once they make their own decision and pass their recommendations over to me, we will act,” said Attorney General Eduardo Torres-Dulce. With votes from Catalonia’s United Left (ERC) coalition, the town council agreed to use government land for cannabis cultivation. Officials say Spanish law is vague on this type of crop, with pro-marijuana consumer associations saying they are allowed to grow it for medicinal purposes.
