Famed painter and sculptor Antoni Tàpies dies aged 88

Antoni Tàpies i Puig, a Catalan painter and sculptor who helped co-found the first post-war movement in Spain known as the "Dau al set," and who was connected to the Surrealist and Dadaist movements, has died at his home in Barcelona at the age of 88, family members told city officials on Monday.

Tàpies was in delicate health and died on Monday afternoon. At press time, there was no infomation about his funeral.

Born in Barcelona on December 13, 1923, Tàpies studied law for three years before deciding to devote his time to art. He opposed the Franco regime, and defended Catalan culture.

He went on to become one of the most important Catalan painters to emerge after World War II.
