New super cop rubs out most of force's top brass

Police leadership changes are common when a new party takes power

Spain's new top cop, Ignacio Cosidó, on Wednesday unveiled a near-total overhaul of the police force's management tier.

Cosidó hauled in 10 of the force's 13-strong leadership structure to inform them their services would no longer be required.

Sweeping changes in police top brass are common in Spain with a change of government. The Socialist government did the same after it took office in 2004, although some top officers remained a little longer in their posts to help with the ongoing investigation into the March 11 terrorist attack in Madrid.

The new appointees are pending official approval by Interior Minister Jorge Fernández Díaz.
