ETA chief gets 60 years for politician's assassination

"Txapote" ordered killing of Navarrese councilor in 2001

The Spanish High Court on Wednesday condemned the former military chief of ETA, Francisco García Gaztelu, alias "Txapote," to 60 years in jail after finding him guilty of ordering the murder of José Javier Múgica, a municipal councilor in Leitza in the region of Navarre. Múgica was killed in 2001 when a bomb attached to his vehicle exploded.

Txapote has stood out even among ETA defendants for his defiant attitude toward courtrooms and judges during several trials over recent years.

ETA last month announced it had abandoned its armed struggle for an independent Basque Country.
