Catalonia to appeal court ruling on official school language

High Court chief judge says decision doesn't question regional education system

The Catalan government announced on Monday that it will appeal a regional High Court decision demanding that Spanish be used as a teaching language in public schools.

"What are we going to have to do? Set up two sets of schools, one for Catalan students and another for Spanish speakers?" asked the region's education commissioner Irene Rigau. "We will not separate our students on the basis of language," she said in a radio interview.

High Court Chief Judge Miguel Ángel Gimeno said Monday that the ruling only affects the plaintiffs in the suit and doesn't question Catalonia's education model.
