Socialist Senator throws in towel after sordid sauna scene
Canary island representative says he will fight to prove innocence after violent late-night arrest
Casimiro Curbelo has stepped down as senator for the Canary island of La Gomera after being involved in a brawl with police officers at a Madrid sauna, sources in the Socialist Party confirmed on Monday.
"I am resigning because I want to prove my innocence and that of my son. And I want to do so as an ordinary citizen, without the privileges that come with a senator's seat," said Curbelo in a press release. The party had been "awaiting" Curbelo's resignation after he and his son were accused of verbally and physically assaulting police officers during a late-night scuffle at a Madrid sauna last week.
Among other things, Curbelo, 60, allegedly yelled at the officers: "I want to see you all die of cancer," and: "I am a senator and I'm going after you one by one. Your careers are finished."
