Socialists to purge senator arrested after violent sauna incident
Casimiro Curbelo allegedly threatened and punched two officers on Thursday morning
Shocked by the violent arrest of a Canary Islands senator following an incident at a Madrid sauna, the Socialist Party has reportedly decided to expel the veteran politician from its ranks.
Police arrested Senator Casimiro Curbelo, 60, and his 26-year-old son Casimiro Adys Curbelo Montañés, after they allegedly threatened and punched two officers who tried to intervene early Thursday morning during a scuffle at a sauna located at the Azca Center. "I want to see you all die of cancer and with my own eyes see how your children-of-whores also die," the senator reportedly told them, according to a police report. "I am a senator and I am going after you one by one. Your careers are finished." During the altercation, one of the suspects tore an officer's shirt. The father and son were charged with assaulting police officers before and after their arrests.
According to the report, the incident began at 4.30am Thursday when Curbelo, his son and another man were inside the Gola sauna near the Santiago Bernabéu stadium. The manager noted that the three were very drunk and began to harass the girls working at the bar. When he asked them to leave, they called the police and the scuffle began.
On Friday, Curbelo telephoned Carmela Silva, the Socialist leader in the Canaries parliament to give her his version, which differed from the police report.
Elena Valenciano, the Socialist national secretary, wrote on Twitter that Curbelo should resign.
