Bad Bunny leads nominations for 2022 Latin Grammys
Rosalía’s critically acclaimed ‘Motomami’ will compete against the Puerto Rican’s album ‘Un Verano Sin Ti’ at the awards, which will take place on November 17
The Latin Recording Academy announced on Tuesday the nominees for the 2022 Latin Grammy Awards, which will take place on November 17. Bad Bunny leads the nominees, with 10 nominations for Un Verano Sin Ti. The Puerto Rican singer, whose real name is Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, is up for Album of the Year, Best Urban/Fusion Performance, Best Reggaeton Performance and Best Urban Music Album. He has also been nominated for Record of the Year for Ojitos Lindos, a collaboration with Colombian band Bomba Estéreo.
Spanish star Rosalía received seven nods for Motomami, an album that has been both a critical and commercial success. The song La Fama, which she recorded with Canadian singer The Weeknd, is up for Record of the Year, while Hentai has been nominated for Song of the Year.
Texan-born producer Édgar Barrera, who made a name for himself in 2021 with hits for artists such as Maluma, Daddy Yankee and Mark Anthony, has been nominated for nine Latin Grammys, including Record of the Year (Pegao) and Song of the Year (Índigo), both collaborations with Colombian pop star Camilo.
Uruguay’s Jorge Drexler has eight nominations, including Album of the Year for Tinta y Tiempo, and Song of the Year for Tocarte, which he recorded with Spanish rapper C. Tangana. Puerto Rican singer Rauw Alejandro also has eight nominations.
A total of 12 songs are up for Record of the Year: Pa Mis Muchachas by Christina Aguilera, Becky G, Nicki Nicole Featuring Nathy Pelus; Castillos de Arena by Pablo Alborán, Envolver, by Anitta; Pa’lla Voy by Marc Anthony; Tocarte by Jorge Drexler and C. Tangana; Provence by Karol G; Vale la Pena, by Juan Luis Guerra, Baloncito Viejo by Carlos Vives and Camilo; and Te Felicito by Sakira and Rauw Alejandro.
Aguilera has made a music comeback after 21 years. The singer, who has Ecuadorian roots, has not been nominated for a Latin Grammy since releasing her first Spanish record Mi Reflejo in 2000. Her latest album, Aguilera, is up for Album of the Year.
In the category of Best New Artist, there are 11 nominees: Cuban bolero singer Angela Álvarez; 24-year-old Mexican sensation Silvana Estrada; Argentinian duo Cande and Paulo; Clarissa, Pol Granch, Nabález, Tiare, Vale, Nicole Zignano, the daughter of singer-songwriter Gian Carlo Zagnano; and Yahritza y Su Esencia, a 15-year-old teenager who has become, along with her brothers, a YouTube phenomenon.
According to Manuel Abud, the president of the Latin Recording Academy, the nominees were chosen from 18,000 applications. To be nominated for a Latin Grammy, at least 51% of the songs must be performed in Spanish, Portuguese or another language of the region. For the 23rd Latin Grammys, the track must have been released between June 2021 and last May. The final round of voting will begin on September 30.
