End of US daylight savings time 2023: When do the clocks ‘fall back’?
In 2023, DST began on March 12, and is set to end on November 5th
Despite widespread dislike among many Americans for the seasonal time adjustments of “spring forward” and “fall back,” it appears that the biannual clock changes for daylight saving time (DST) will continue. As of 2023, no significant legislative alterations to DST have been implemented, so clocks will fall back on Sunday, November 5.
Federal regulations currently prevent states from adopting permanent daylight saving time. While proposed changes in federal law, such as the Sunshine Protection Act, have yet to undergo voting procedures in 2023, numerous U.S. states are contemplating legislation to eliminate these clock changes. However, there is notably less momentum compared to previous years, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.
The Sunshine Protection Act is a bill proposed by Senator Marco Rubio of Florida, who has introduced it in the U.S. Senate every year since 2018. In March 2023, Representative Vern Buchanan (R-FL) introduced it in the House of Representatives. The bill would establish permanent daylight saving time nationwide, and there would be no clock changes in the spring and fall. “I know this is not the most important issue confronting America, but it’s one of those issues where there’s a lot of agreement,” Rubio has said. “If we can get this passed, we don’t have to do this stupidity anymore.” According to Reuters, since 2015, about 30 states have introduced legislation to end the twice-yearly changing of clocks, with some states proposing to do it only if neighboring states do the same.
There is scientific evidence that changing the clocks increases the risk of adverse health consequences, including heart attacks and strokes. Several Representatives have cited these studies to highlight why it’s important to put an end to hour changes.
