Actor Alejandro Landero receives support after losing his home in Mexico City
Residents in the neighborhoods of Roma and Condesa, where he lived until now, mobilized on social media to find him temporary shelter
The case of Mexican soap opera actor Alejandro Landero, who was reported by locals as being homeless, has sparked a wide social media effort to find ways to help him. A few days ago, a resident of Mexico City’s Roma-Condesa area named Verónica Hernández recorded a video of Landero and called on people to help the actor.
The clip went viral, but it has since been clarified that while Landero is experiencing financial difficulties, as he himself has stated, he is actively looking for ways to move forward. The video showed that the actor had been sleeping outdoors for three days with his four cats and small dog.
“I kindly ask for your support so that someone can help our neighbor, who is homeless. [His pets] are very calm. I don’t know if anyone could please help him for a month at most so that he can have a roof over his head,” Hernández says in the video.
Thanks to a swift citizen response, he was provided with a temporary place to spend the night.
“I’m going through a difficult situation, a tough test, but God always shows you the way and brings the right people into your life. Today is proof of that. I want to thank everyone for the invaluable help you are giving me,” Landero said in a follow-up video.
After receiving support — as well as some criticism — Landero chose to leave the temporary shelter to continue gathering resources to resume the plans he had before this situation. He hopes to rebuild his life and settle in the city of Puerto Vallarta, where he intends to work in the hospitality sector and promote inclusion policies for neurodivergent individuals, including those with autism or ADHD, conditions he has been diagnosed with.
According to the latest Population and Housing Census from Mexico’s National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI), published in 2020, 5,778 people were recorded as homeless in Mexico. Of every 100 people in this situation, 87 are men and 13 are women, and the majority are between 30 and 59 years old. Mexico City has the highest prevalence of homelessness. In recent years, rising rental prices in central areas of the capital have worsened difficulties in accessing adequate housing.
Figures from the General Territorial Planning Program of Mexico City 2020–2035 indicate that more than 20,000 families are displaced each year due to the lack of affordable housing options. Most end up moving to the outskirts, and in some cases, face precarious living conditions.
Who is Alejandro Landero?
Alejandro Landero’s acting career began in 1982 with a supporting role in the Mexican soap opera Bianca Vidal. His most remembered performance was as Rigoberto Camacho in Rosa Salvaje, a production in which he shared the screen with Verónica Castro, Guillermo Capetillo, Laura Zapata, and Edith González.
After that project, he appeared in several television productions until 1993, when he decided to retire from acting. Since then, although he remained out of the entertainment industry, local media have reported that he continued working as a teacher and running small businesses.
