Pedro Almodóvar to receive honorary degree from Oxford University
Filmmaker’s “outstanding” contribution to filmmaking coincides with release of 20th movie
Spain’s Oscar-winning film director Pedro Almodóvar will be awarded an honorary degree by Oxford University in recognition of his “outstanding” contribution to cinema.
The ceremony will take place on June 22 and is also honoring economist Paul Krugman, architect Kazuyo Sejima and seven other “distinguished men and women.”
This will be the filmmaker’s third honorary degree, having received his first from Spain’s University of Castilla-La Mancha in 1998, and a second one from Harvard University in 2009.
The new accolade comes ahead of Almodóvar’s 20th film, Julieta, which is being released in Spain on April 8, and August 26 in the United Kingdom.
Almodóvar was nominated for an Oscar for his 1988 comedy Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, and has since won multiple awards for Talk to Her, All About My Mother, and Volver, among others.
