Prosecutors demand Damm brewery owners face fraud trial
Beer brand’s former chief and his son accused of defrauding government of some 42 million euros
Anticorruption prosecutors asked Spain's High Court on Thursday to put the former president of Damm brewery and his son on trial for tax fraud and money laundering.
Demetrio Carceller Coll and his son Demetrio Carceller Arce, who is now in charge of the Catalan brewery, are being charged with fraud related to their income tax statements, in which they identified themselves as non-residents.
Since at least 1990, they allegedly stated that they resided in Portugal and Britain to avoid paying a higher tax rate, prosecutors said. The two allegedly defrauded the government of up to 42.34 million euros between 2001 and 2009. The prosecution is asking for jail terms of 48 years for the father and 14 for the son.
