Gareth Bale’s eagerly anticipated home debut for Real Madrid did not go exactly to plan on Sunday evening: the Bernabéu faithful caught their first glimpse of Real’s new galáctico, but only in the pre-match warm-up, during which the Welshman sustained a thigh injury.
Isco, who was to sit out the game despite his rich vein of form, was drafted into replace the former Tottenham forward. No official report on the extent of Bale’s injury was available at press time; he has played less than 90 minutes for his new club after recovering from a groin strain that has sidelined him since July. Real Madrid paid Tottenham a reported world record fee in the region of 100 million euros for Bale’s services.
In the match Real beat Getafe 4-1. Cristiano Ronaldo scored two, with Pepe and Isco grabbing the other goals after Lafita had put the visitor ahead.
