Spanish women crowned European basketball champions
Team returns to top of the podium after 20 years and a succession of near-misses

The Spanish women’s basketball team won the European Championship in Orchies on Sunday night, beating tournament host France in the final 69-70 for the second conteinental crown of its history — 20 years after the first. Led by championship MVP Sancho Lyttle and Alba Torrens, with 20 and 21 points respectively on the night, this generation of Spanish players finally reached the highest step on the podium after winning six bronze medals and one silver in European championships since 2001.
Amaya Valdemoro, who in France became Spain’s most-capped player with 258 appearances for the national team, now retires with a gold medal.
