Deputy PM says Cabinet decree already prevents some evictions

Sáenz de Santamaría argues that government has gone further than radical Andalusian plan

Deputy Prime Minister Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría on Friday claimed the Cabinet had already approved measures to stem a spate of evictions that went further than a radical decree approved earlier this week by the Andalusian government.

Andalusia plans, in extreme cases, to stay evictions on the homes of needy families for up to three years. Sáenz de Santamaría said a decree already passed by the Cabinet also prevented evictions in the case of families that face social exclusion for a period of two years.

There have been a series of protests against evictions outside the homes of prominent politicians in recent weeks. Police on Friday prevented a group of some 150 people from holding a protest outside the home of the speaker of Congress, Jesús Posada, called by the Mortgage Victims Platform pressure group.
