Socialists want a billion-euro fund to fight growing poverty
Opposition leader Rubalcaba describes current situation as a “national emergency”
Socialist secretary general Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba on Sunday asked for a "great commitment" from the political institutions and the country's social sectors to come up with a one-billion-euro fund this year to help fight growing poverty in Spain.
"This initiative is to bring together everyone to find a way out of this problem, which gets more dramatic by the day," he said at a party meeting.
Under this proposal, Rubalcaba explained that the initiative would help more than 500,000 poor families, create or maintain around 30,000 jobs, and allow some 80,000 more people to find help so they can return to the job market.
"This is a national emergency," he said.
