This week’s movie releases

Sir Anthony Hopkins swaps movie psychos for Psycho the movie in Hitchcock. With latex ladled down his front to recreate that iconic frame, the man who was Dr Hannibal Lecter plays director Alfred Hitchcock in this film about the creation of his 1960 masterpiece Psycho. Based on a book by Stephen Rebello, it centers on the relationship between Hitchcock and his wife and collaborator Alma Reville, played by a feisty Helen Mirren, while Scarlett Johansson portrays the star of the movie-within-the-movie, Janet Leigh. The director is Sacha Gervasi, known for offbeat rock doc Anvil! The Story of Anvil.

Done governating, Arnold Schwarzenegger is back (after all, he said he would be) in The Last Stand. He’s also showing his age and vulnerability in this no-nonsense tale as a former LAPD cop now leading a quiet life as a sheriff in a small Arizona town. Doing what Spanish actors do when they go to Hollywood — see Javier Bardem, Luis Tosar, Jordi Mollà... — Eduardo Noriega plays a crime lord who, having escaped from FBI custody, is speeding toward the Mexican border across Arnie’s patch in a souped-up Corvette. The movie marks the US debut of South Korea’s Kim Ji-woon (A Tale of Two Sisters).

Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry is a portrait of the Chinese artist and activist. A thorn in the authorities’ side, Ai has gained notoriety with his provocative work, which has included covering the floor of London’s Tate Modern with 100 million hand-painted porcelain sunflower seeds. Alison Klayman’s doc draws on interviews with Ai’s family and covers his 2011 spell in jail.
