Wikileaks’ Assange hires Garzón as legal counsel
“We demand that the process to which he is submitted is truly just,” says suspended judge
Suspended High Court Judge Baltasar Garzón has been hired by Julian Assange as a legal advisor in his battle to be granted asylum in Ecuador, the Australian Wikileaks founder told EL PAÍS on Wednesday.
Assange, who is wanted for questioning in Sweden over alleged sexual offenses, fears that if he is extradited to the Scandinavian country he could be handed to the United States, where the anti-secrecy campaigner believes he could be charged over the 2010 dissemination of State Department diplomatic cables.
Neither country has filed formal charges against Assange.
“We ask and demand that there are guarantees that the process to which he is submitted is truly just,” Garzón said in a radio interview. “Assange is no rebel against jurisdiction and respects the course of justice. There is clear political intent behind every matter that exists in his current situation.”
Garzón was barred from office in Spain for 11 years last February for illegally wiretapping conversations between lawyers and defendants as part of a corruption trial.
