Student protestors in Valencia call for general strike

Hundreds converge on regional education department demanding stoppage on February 29

Student protests in Valencia continued on Thursday as hundreds of demonstrators converged on the regional Education department, calling for a general strike on February 29 and the head of the central government delegate, Paula Sánchez de León. “If you don’t quit, we’ll be back tomorrow,” the students chanted. The protests, against spending cuts in public education, attracted international scrutiny when police used force to disperse demonstrators, many of them school-age children. National Police chief Ignacio Cosidó backed his officers, saying that “violent elements” had hijacked the protest.
