Chief prosecutor gets go-ahead to impugn Bildu slate

Candidates will be vetted through Civil Guard reports

The government on Wednesday gave the Attorney General the go-ahead to ask the Supreme Court to block any candidates from the Bildu alliance from running in the May 22 Basque local elections.

Deputy Prime Minister Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba said the chief prosecutor could proceed to impugn certain contenders if he finds any of the people running have links to the outlawed Batasuna party, the political wing of terrorist group ETA.

The Attorney General's Office will gather its evidence from Civil Guard reports to present to the court. Bildu, an alliance with two legitimate Basque radical left parties, presented its slate of about 250 candidates on Monday.
